Task 1: Analysing City of God (Cidade de Deus)

You need to address the points below and structure a thoughtful, academic response.
You can either write the piece in an essay form or discuss each answer in the way the sheet is set out. Please aim to write fifty words (at least) for each question.
The task must be completed by the end of the session on Tuesday 15th October 2020, and be presented in a word document. Please ensure it is uploaded to your ongoing Wix page on Unit 12.

The essay must begin with the sentence ‘The film City of God (Cidade De Deus), Meirelles, 2002, Brazil 18 uses…’
1. Is the narrative non-linear? Explain exactly how it works.
1a. There is a particular narrative device employed to address the spectator. Explain what it is and how it positions us when watching?
2. The film wants us to empathise with protagonist Rocket, how does it do this?
3. How does the film present other characters / protagonists, and are we, the audience, asked to empathise with them?
4. The mise-en-scene plays an important part in the narrative… explain how and why.
5. Does the narrative of City of God present a view that we can relate to from our own experiences?
6. Violence is ever-present in the film – is it presented as glamorous?
